The material in this report is based on retrospective view of intestinal obstruction treated at KyoungPook National University. Hospital during 10 years from October 1, 1965 to Septe-mber 30, 1975.
1) The most frequent age group was from. 30 to 39 and male to female sex ratio was 1.7: 1.
2) The common causes of intestinal obstruction were post-operative, adhesion in 173 cases (47%), intussusception in 97 cases &(26.4), stricture or obstruction due to foreign body, neoplasm and inflammation in 39 cases (10.6%). These three represent (84.0%) in this series.
3) The location of intestinal obstruction were 74.4% ileum, 13.3% in jejunum and 11.8% in colon.
4) The cardinal symptoms and signs were abdominal pain in 91.3%, vomiting in abdominal distension in 72.8% and abnormal peristalsis in 78.8%, abdominal tenderness in 74.2% and-abdominal distension in- 72:8%.
5) The positive sign for the diagnosis of intestinal obstruction with simple X-ray was present in 91.0% of 312 cases.
6) Eighty cases were treated, non-operatively with success either by reduction with barium enema or by decompression through nasogastric orr long tube. Surgical correction was attempted for 288 cases, including intestinal resection of 96 cases (26.1%) adhesiolysis of 93 cases (25. 3 %) and manual reduction of 63 cases (17%).
7) The plication were added in 20 cases in an attempt to prevent recur of obstruction and their results were good.
8) The incidence of post-operative complication was 23.1%. The most common of them was wound infection, in 12.2%.
9). Overall mortality rate was 5.7%. The refractory hypovolemic shock and sepsis were the leading cause of death.
10) To avert or minimize the wound infection, delayed primary closure was done in 54 cases with suspected contamination during operation. Their post-operative hospital stay was 11.5 days in average, 4.7 days being shortened compared to the ordinary group.
